Doors Open RI 2019 – Pawtucket + Central Falls

November 5, 2019 By James Turner

Doors Open RI is an organization that arranges for publis access to sites that are otherwise unaccessible. It gives the public the ability to experience the design, architecture and charm of sites throughout Rhode Island. Such is this years’ version of Doors Open which provided access to the following sites. (1) Jenks Park Cogswell Tower and Grotto; (2) La Galeria; (3) Elks Lodge; (4) The Guild; (5) Old Industrial Trust Company Building; (6) Pawtucket City Hall; (7) Slater Mill; (8) National Grid Historic Bridge Mill Power Station; (9) Kalon Club; and lastly McCoy Stadium. This is the third Doors Open event I have attended of which all were enjoyable and informative. I graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls. Although I visited Cogswell Tower on many an occasion I never knew there was a grotto beneath the structure. The docent at the grotto informed our group that she in fact, was married there. Could be a venue and source of income to the City of Central Falls possibly as well as an idea for anyone seeking an unique backdrop whereas to take their vows. To learn more about Doors Open visit their webpage at . Just maybe the next door that is opened is in your neighborhood. Some images from the event.

Interesting places again, Jim. I missed the opportunity but I don’t think I could have climbed all those stairs to the tower. I had dinner a couple of times at the To Kalon Club, it had the old-time charm indeed.

The Kalon Club is the one event I did not get to see. For some reason, ole guy here, I missed the event even though it was on my event paperwork given to me. Heard it was quite spetacular along with its history. There was certainly easy access to some of the events especially as there were nearby parking and minimal stairs to access the building. Some even street level. Hopefully we both can make the next one.

Seeing Cogswell Tower brings back memories of when I would see it everyday going to school at Notre Dame.
    Great photos Jim!
